MDF – The Materials of Luxury Hotel Furniture

Medium density fiberboard (MDF) is an excellent choice for high standard hotel furniture. Tran Duc Furnishings, a premium hotel furniture company based in Vietnam, provides a variety of materials for 3-, 4-, and 5-star hotel furnishings.

1. Definition of MDF

MDF is a form of engineered wood that has unique properties in the production of hotel furniture. MDF was initially produced in the United States as a wood fiber composite by combining wood fibers under high heat and pressure and then pressing them into panel shapes. Furthermore, the development of MDF has resulted in a structurally stable material that may be used to replace real wood in a variety of applications. Besides that, when solid wood has similar environmental reactions as real tree blocks, medium density fiberboard absorbs less detrimental effects in temperature and humidity changes. As a result, since its inception in the 1970s in the United States, the innovation has increased the production of wood.

As a luxury term for the future, it is also significant to nature and humans. When it comes to hotel furniture, people are always facing deforestation crises owing to a lack of wood supplies to support human activities. Because it takes such a long time for trees to grow large enough to conform to dimensional requirements in woodwork. The fiberboard composition, on the other hand, permits any timber size to be used in the manufacture of bespoke panels.

2. Production Line

To begin, raw materials are processed and gathered in a rejection cycle, which mostly involves the use of magnets to eliminate contaminants. In truth, the higher quality of MDF is entirely dependent on the furniture manufacturer’s capabilities. The materials are divided into two categories: large chunks and little flakes. During the preparation, unqualified materials are discarded, while qualified materials are softened by passing through a pre-steaming bin. Then, using heavy machinery, these are compressed into useable wood fiber that is free of dampness.

Second, after adding chemical ingredient, the forms are mixed together and passed via scalping rollers. Wood fiber products produce thick mats as a result of the rolls. The mats are continuously pressed with tremendous pressure to create useable panels. In luxury hotel, the technology is critical in creating steady strength for MDF, which may be as consistent as solid wood or even stronger.

Finally, different sanding techniques are used to smooth up the panel surfaces. The goal is to meet the MDF criteria so that veneer (another suitable material for premium hotel furniture) may be applied later. Anti-static systems are used in these stages to prevent static electricity.

3. MDF Benefits Over Solid Wood

  • A chemical ingredient may improve the capacity to control pests and wood worms.
  • When MDF is used for a long time in a humid environment, it suffers less damage.
  • Because of its dimensional customisation, the fiberboard (MDF) provides designers with a lot of versatility.
  • MDF does not break or split when used in the manufacture of premium hotel furniture, and it is a cost-effective option.

4. MDF Drawbacks

  • MDF does not have the same wood grain as genuine wood.
  • Water instantly saturates Medium Fiberboard.
  • MDF is more dense than chipboard, a form of manufactured wood.
  • The production of MDF generates undesirable wood dust, which can readily catch fire.
